The Stealth Adams 18-and-under softball team had one of its best showings of the year as they placed fourth in the 2011 Amateur Softball Association 18u Gold Western National tournament last month.

The tournament took place from July 27-31 in Phoenix.

"It wasn't too bad for our first time going out," Stealth coach Sarah Adams said.

Gutierrez Headed for Tennessee State

After a couple of months of uncertainty about where she would be going to school in the fall, recent Paraclete graduate Savannah Gutierrez finally found the right fit.

Gutierrez committed to play Division 1 softball at Tennessee State University a couple of weeks ago.

It was another year with promising freshmen for the Valley's high school softball teams.

Most teams don't carry too many freshmen, but several teams had one or two youngsters who proved they were worthy to be on the varsity squad.

Justine Vela, sr, Stockdale, Pitcher

The three-time winner was even more effective as a senior, finishing 23-4 with 20 shutouts, a career-high 337 strikeouts and a career-low 0.11 ERA. She also hit .456 with 14 extra-base hits and will play for UC Davis next year.

The Stealth Adams 18-and-under Gold softball team cruised through its first three pool play games at the Triple Crown Sports Sparkler Showcase in Colorado before winning their final pool play game in dramatic fashion on Wednesday.

Stealth defeated Houston RBI 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh on Wednesday after coach Sarah Adams was ejected while arguing with the umpire after he called Joselyn Rodriguez out after what appeared to be a perfect bunt.

One of the most complete players ever to compete at ElCamino Real, Gilmore led the Conquistadores in every possible way on their

journey to the City Section final.

Although ECR came up short in its bid to capture the program's first title since 2005, Gilmore demonstrated why she was one of the state's most feared hitters, reaching base in all three plate appearances and scoring twice against Carson.

It was that level of respect from opponents that earned the Oregon State-bound Gilmore her selection as City player of the year, along with Cal-Hi Sports all-state first-team recognition and MaxPreps.com All-America first-team honors.

Gilmore hit .574 with 10 home runs, 46 runs, 58 RBIs, 14 stolen bases, a .647 on-base average and 1.160 slugging percentage. She walked 21 times and struck out once in 116 plate appearances.

Gilmore set California prep records for most career RBIs (226) and runs (195), along with 216 hits and 47 home runs, both ranking on the state's all-time top 10. She finished as the area's career leader in hits, runs and RBIs.

High School Softball: Rosamond, Cal City Top East Kern All-Leaguers in HDL

Rosamond might have finished second in the High Desert League softball standings this past season, but the Roadrunners dominated all-league honors.

Freshman pitcher McKenzie Draper, junior catcher Amanda Conroy and senior infielder Joycelyn Soria were named to the first team, released last week.

Draper had a .418 batting average and pitched virtually every inning late in the season, compiling a record of 7-4 in league with a 4.03 ERA.

Conroy hit .462 with 23 RBIs and four homers, and Soria had a .370 average and scored 23 runs.

Cal City had two first-teamers, senior catcher Danielle Whittey and junior pitcher Alyssa Cerda, who finished 2-3 in the league in hitting - Whittey with a .553 average, Cerda at .551.

When the Rosamond High softball team ended its season in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 playoffs, junior catcher Amanda Conroy thought her chances of achieving her goal of making all-CIF ended with it.

"I figured since because we got knocked out in the first round that it would be a really low probability that I would make that," Conroy said. "I mean, they only got to see one game of me."

But Conroy, along with three other Valley softball players were named to the all-CIF Division 6 softball team, which was announced Monday.

Quartz Hill junior second baseman Sammie Murrietta was also honored on the Division 3 team, while Paraclete senior second baseman Katie Anderus and senior pitcher Savannah Gutierrez were named to the Division 6 team.
